Local Government Victoria (LGV) works across municipal, regional and state tiers to support councils to meet their legislative and community emergency management responsibilities. We deliver projects and initiatives that build the capability, capacity and resilience of councils before, during and after emergencies.
Continuous improvement
LGV is continuously working to clarify and define the role of councils in emergency management. We continue to address recommendations and findings from reviews and royal commissions. We have led and completed crucial actions within the Strategic Action Plan (SAP) to increase the capability and capacity of councils.

Emergency operations
LGV is part of the Department of Government Services which is the lead response support agency for local government. This means we provide support to councils during the response to any emergency. This includes:
- working with councils to understand the impacts to their assets and community services
- escalation of complex issues raised by councils into the State Control Centre
- reporting to the Minister for Local Government.
Council Emergency Funding Programs
LGV administers funding programs to councils to support communities impacted by emergencies. To find out which programs are currently active, go to the funding webpage.
