Children’s story times and co-working are now available at the heart of Armstrong Creek, as the new Biyal-a Armstrong Creek Library opened its doors to the community on Thursday, 1 August 2024.
The library, which spans three storeys and 2,500 square metres, features more than 30,000 new books and resources, a dedicated children’s and youth area, outdoor terraces, a media and maker space, and flexible spaces to support co-working, meetings, and community events.
‘Biyal-a’ (pronounced Be-al-a) is a Wadawurrung expression reflecting the Armstrong Creek valley-scape and its wa-tercourse as a place of many red gums. The library’s designers, Buchan Architects, worked with the Wadawurrung Traditional Owners to create a ‘living water’ narrative which carries through the library.
The $21.8 million project was jointly funded by the Victorian Government and the City of Greater Geelong, with $1.5 million contribution from the Living Libraries Infrastructure Program.
