About this training

The Victorian Government provides this compulsory training for all Victorians who wish to nominate as a candidate in any council elections.

The training will help you understand the role and responsibilities of being a councillor.

Under the Local Government Act 2020 you will not be able to nominate as a candidate unless you have completed the training.

To strengthen candidates’ understanding of councillor roles and responsibilities, this candidate training has been reviewed and updated in July 2024. This updated module also includes information to help in understanding conflicts of interest, the required code of conduct, and what support is available to help incoming councillors perform their role.

You are encouraged to complete the updated training even if you've previously done it and still have a valid certificate.

How long will the training take?

The training should take around an hour to complete.

Where can I get help if I need it during the training?

Help is available during business hours from Local Government Victoria.

Email address: lgv@ecodev.vic.gov.au

Alternatively, you can find your council contact details.
