About this training

The Victorian Government provides this compulsory training for all Victorians who wish to nominate as a candidate in any council elections.

The training will help you understand the role and responsibilities of being a councillor.

Under the Local Government Act 2020 you will not be able to nominate as a candidate unless you have completed the training.

This candidate training is being reviewed and updated ahead of the 2024 council elections.

While the training can still be accessed and completed now, it is recommended that you complete the training following the update which will be completed by mid-June 2024.

This page will be regularly updated.

How long will the training take?

The training should take around an hour to complete.

Help is available during business hours from Local Government Victoria.

To register you will need access to an email address.

As this training is mandatory, there may be a time in the future when we are asked to verify that you did complete it.

You will need access to an email account. When you register, we will send a unique link to access the training.

If you can’t finish the training in one session your progress will be saved and you’ll be able to resume your training via the link.

We will send confirmation you have completed the course with the information you need to provide about the training when you nominate.
