The City of Maribyrnong is a small, densely populated area, located in the inner western region of Melbourne. The City has the second most ethnically diverse population in Victoria, with 40 % of residents born outside Australia. Residents come from more than 135 different countries and speak over 80 languages.
The area includes a large industrial sector. Changes in land use have resulted from the restructuring of local manufacturing industries and the relocation of the Commonwealth defence industries from the area. The main industries include oil and fat manufacturing, basic chemical manufacturing.

Councillors are elected through preferential voting.
From November 2008 general council elections, all Victorian councillors serve a four year term.
The council's next independent Electoral Representation Review is scheduled to be conducted prior to the 2012 elections.
